If you have any business, whether it offers a service or a product, then you also know that you need to make sales of that service or product or you are not a business, you are just a hobby or a charity.
This is true whether or not your business is on-line. In order to make sales you need customers. If you have a physical shop you need what is called “foot traffic”, i.e. people walking past your door, some of whom will walk into your shop. If the ones who come in engage with the shop assistant or the display advertising they become “leads”, or potential customers. Of the ones who come in, some will buy and some will leave without buying.
In an Internet business, the potential customers who visit a web page or an offer of some kind, are referred to, not as “foot traffic”, but just as “traffic.” It is important to remember that these are not bits of electronic information but are people, all real potential customers. We call them “leads.”
So, as I said, if you have a business, you need sales, to get sales you need customers, to get customers you need leads, and in an online context, to get leads you need TRAFFIC. Traffic is the lifeblood of any online business.
Where or how do you get traffic? The easiest way to understand this is to look at a search engine such as Google and see how it works. For example, Joe searches on Google for toothpaste. He gets a list of 20 million pages about toothpaste. He is a bit overwhelmed, so he types in “home-made toothpaste made from baking soda and eucalyptus leaves”. Suddenly the list is much shorter and more specific.
The second entry looks interesting so he clicks on the link to “Mary-Loo’s Home made Toothpaste Recipe”, and arrives at her website. Mary -Loo has just received “search engine traffic“. If he likes her information and sees a link on her page to her $37 e-book about toothpaste recipes and signs up to a newsletter, Mary-Lou has a lead. If he then buys an e-book she has a customer.
This is just one of many ways to get traffic.
You will know by now that your website or offer needs traffic. It follows that by learning to drive traffic to your business website or offer is essential if you are to generate leads, make sales and to succeed online.
